Summary

“How long are you going to wait before you demand the best for yourself?”
– Epictetus, Stoic philosopher

Where can you find joy? Gain strength? How should we face our fears? Deal with the death of a loved one? And what about those reoccurring depressing thoughts?

While traditional schooling doesn’t address such questions, it’s exactly what ancient schools of philosophy were all about: They taught you how to live。 Even though these schools don’t exist anymore, you and I and most people are in as much need of a philosophy that guides us through life as we ever were。

This compelling, highly actionable guide shows you how to deal more effectively with whatever life throws at you and live up to your best self。

A mix of timeless wisdom and empowering advice, The Little Book of Stoicism will point the way to anyone seeking a calm and wise life in a chaotic world。

A great book, the first 82 Pages changes my perspectives a lot。

I really liked the book as well as it's many lessons on how to tackle everyday situations and think differently。 The author quotes Ryan Holiday a lot (maybe because he is his role model for stoicism, I don't know) and sometimes repeats himself quite a lot but given that the repetitions only help the reader fortify the message he is trying to give, I wouldn't hold that against him。 All in all, a great beginners book on stoicism in my opinion。 I really liked the book as well as it's many lessons on how to tackle everyday situations and think differently。 The author quotes Ryan Holiday a lot (maybe because he is his role model for stoicism, I don't know) and sometimes repeats himself quite a lot but given that the repetitions only help the reader fortify the message he is trying to give, I wouldn't hold that against him。 All in all, a great beginners book on stoicism in my opinion。 。。。more

First of all thank you, Jonas, for the insightful introduction to the world of Stoicism。The first part of the book deals with the history, origins, and values of this philosophy。 In what I consider to be well-edited and coherently sequenced chapters, Jonas leads one towards the second part of the book containing practices (55 individual exercises and wisdoms)。Here, too, I find the division conclusive, although it is noticeable that some practices sound like repetitions and could have been partia First of all thank you, Jonas, for the insightful introduction to the world of Stoicism。The first part of the book deals with the history, origins, and values of this philosophy。 In what I consider to be well-edited and coherently sequenced chapters, Jonas leads one towards the second part of the book containing practices (55 individual exercises and wisdoms)。Here, too, I find the division conclusive, although it is noticeable that some practices sound like repetitions and could have been partially summarized。 So it often happens that a practice is either only expanded or merely explained in other words in the next chapter。All in all, however, it does not detract from the reading fun and I have added many literature and permanent notes in my Zettelkasten。Thank you, Jonas, for your work。 。。。more

。。。more

Great intro into stoicismI like the casual writing style and how the author keeps it not too serious, with a healthy amount of jokes。Some great stoic principles which anyone is better of acknowledging。

Great book。It sounds like a compilation of other stoics, but maybe this was the plan of the book。Either than that, I feel like it is a great first book to read on Stoicism。 It introduces the main writers and philosophy well。Q: Can one be a Stoic and Christian (or other religions) same time?

A culmination of all the artefacts for a better living。I found an answer to a questions in this book。 What inspires someone to do a great job? While some have the intention to please etc。, but passionate individuals secret sauce is ‘Be the best in what you do。 Accept the area of control and don’t bother on the result。’The logic is too small to be overlooked but the impact of this is, it will practically remove anxiety, procrastination, negative emotions…

。。。more

This book is my first read on stoicism。 It covers short history of some philosophers, introduction of stoicism as well as numbers of stoic practices。 The writing is so captivating and simple to understand。 I feel like the author is directly talking to me through this book。 Much grateful to author for this work。

Edward Shields

A good read for anybody unfamiliar with the subject。 Nothing difficult here。 I found lots of the historical information fascinating。 My only criticism is that the author tried to hard to sell the ideas to me with colloquial language etc。 I really felt this was not required as the stories and theories clearly speak for themselves。 I have tried to adopt lots of the ideas in this book in to my life so I consider reading this book time well spent。

I did not like how some parts of the book are organized, but it is a good book explaining Stoicism, nevertheless。

I really liked the Philosophy concept, being almost carefree and I have noticed those changes lately on my day to day life however when I got to the practices I didn't like the way the writer imposes the techniques as they are the only way you can achieve stoicism, I'm an explorer myself I like to read about this philosophy of life and others and maybe come up with a mixture of them to live my life through。 I really liked the Philosophy concept, being almost carefree and I have noticed those changes lately on my day to day life however when I got to the practices I didn't like the way the writer imposes the techniques as they are the only way you can achieve stoicism, I'm an explorer myself I like to read about this philosophy of life and others and maybe come up with a mixture of them to live my life through。 。。。more

Practical, helpful, simpleThis book presents stoicism in a very digestible way。 The first half is concept and second half is putting the concepts into practice。 I particularly like the 15 Stoic Principles info graphic。

Good start for Stoic beginners。 We should appreciate our life more and don’t take everything for granted。 2。 We should not be afraid of losing everything。 It will still be okay。 We can live with less, it’s not that bad。 3。We should strive for moderation。 Own less, be freer。The good, better, best reflection

Used to live a stoic life。 Got away from it in the last decade or so。 This was a good refresher。

A good second book to read on stoicism? I like the chatty style but you might want a more measured argument for a first read (Irving’s Guide to the Good Life) or one which argues more compellingly for why and how Stoicism applies to modern life (Brown’s Happy)。 By the time you’ve read a few more books or engaged with source material you might, like me, be hoping the “practices” at the end will be more like exercises, how to “do” Stoicism daily; but they are more like bite-size lessons on key poi A good second book to read on stoicism? No, Jonas! How frankly horrible (and thank god unrealistic) to want people to become less attached to their kids; the point of keeping in mind that they might die is to let the love you feel for them really fill your every pore, let it inform your behaviour and help you appreciate your kids all the more whilst you have them。 I’d still recommend this book as it’s such an easy read and has lots of helpful advice, just apply a Stoic principle and use your own reason to challenge it! 。。。more

For anyone who wants to delve into the world of stoicism, this is a perfect place to start。 It's clear that stoicism is vast in it's studies and philosophers, and this book breaks down each brilliantly。 It provides a great back story to the original philosophers, teaches us key terminology without forcing it at us, and gives us loads of practical advice to follow and apply in our own lives。 For anyone who wants to delve into the world of stoicism, this is a perfect place to start。 It's clear that stoicism is vast in it's studies and philosophers, and this book breaks down each brilliantly。 It provides a great back story to the original philosophers, teaches us key terminology without forcing it at us, and gives us loads of practical advice to follow and apply in our own lives。 。。。more
